How does crafting work in Guildwars?

Item crafting is possibly one of the most well known tasks in any MMO. ArenaNet has successfully incorporated a crafting system into their first game Guild Wars. By shying away from the constraints of the common crafting system seen in many MMO's, ArenaNet breaks ground by simplifying the process. The idea is having an NPC craft the armor, instead of your character. You gather the correct amounts of materials and bring them back the NPC Crafter.

How do you obtain gear?

First of all, you should probably know what type of "gear" your character will have. No matter what class you choose to play as, you will always have 5 main pieces of armor: Head, Chest, Arm, Leg and Foot. There are many different types of these armor depending on what class you choose. Your character will also have a weapon, and an off-hand weapon. Of course, if you choose to use a two handed weapon with your character, you will not have access to the off-hand weapon slot. The next part of this Crafting guide will explain how to go about gathering the right materials and how to use them to craft that "oh so sweet" armor.

-GATHERING MATERIAL-
Gathering materials used to be considered a "chore" until now. To go about getting certain items, you need to find out how much of what material that armor takes to craft/upgrade it. Normally, to collect materials, you would spend hours attempting to trade for it. Not anymore, In Guild Wars, you can collect what you need by killing certain monster; there is a chance that the monster killed will drop what is called a "Salvageable Item." To salvage the materials from that item, you can buy a "Salvage Kit" that will extract the material from the Salvageable. All items except, Runes, Charms, Dye, A few quest items, rings and upgrade components can be salvaged. There many different forms of salvageable in the game. If you're not about finding what you need manually, there is a "Crafting Material Trader" who sells the more common materials for a certain price and in increments of 10. Depending on how much or how little of that material there is, the price can go up or down. Not all crafting materials will be present here due to the fact that the Trader only sells what is sold to him. So if your looking for a rare material, there is the possibility it may not be available. So if you can't find what you're looking for there, try trading with other players. Currently, the only Crafting Material Trader is in the city of Lions Arch.

-UPGRADING & CRAFTING-
Upgrading armor is extremely simple. You can obtain runes and weapon upgrade components by trading with other players or by salvaging them from rare salvageable. After you have what you need to upgrade that certain item, you head to one of the various crafters found in many cities and outposts with the materials you need and he crafts the armor/upgrade for you. Remember that crafting is not free. The prices can range drastically depending on what you want to craft. Located under the picture of the armor/weapon/ material you want to craft is the amount of items needed and gold needed to craft that certain piece of armor. To actually have that Crafter actually make the item, drag the piece you would like crafted to the one of the 8 slots located underneath the box with all the items that can be crafted. After you've got what you want, simply hit craft, and that item will appear in your inventory. Also, do not forget that after crafting any item except materials, that item will be automatically customized for your character, and cannot be sold for anything.

-WEAPON UPGRADING-
To upgrade your weapon, you need to collect some form of upgrade component. There are many different types of upgrades available for many weapons. As of now, to upgrade the weapon, you double click the upgrade, then the weapon you want to apply it to. You do not need to visit the crafter to do this. When the game is released, there will be a list of weapons you can upgrade your current weapon to. Unfortunately, these are not available yet. All weapon upgrades have different stat's and modifiers. Some may increase health, while others may increase attack rate.

All right, so now you know how to successfully craft, upgrade and obtain materials in order to get that awesome armor/weapon. We hope that this guide has helped you in your quest for the best and thanks for reading.
